A tire casing is a lot like a diesel engine purring under the hood of an 18-wheeler. Take care of it and it will last a long time and earn you money. Neglect it and it will cost you a lot more than it needs to.
"Casings are the core of your tire investment," according to Al Cohn, commercial tire technical marketing manager for Goodyear. If you focus on that investment, you will reap the rewards of a lower cost per mile for the life of the tire."
How often a tire can normally be retreaded depends on various factors, some dependent upon application, others on management practices. As a general rule, the faster the wear, the more times a tire may be retreaded since there is not as much fatigue in the casing. Line haul fleets that have high mileage and slow wear may get from one to three retreads on a casing, while residential trash haulers may get five to eight retreads, provided they don't lose the tire due to injuries.
